A few days ago I shared my new art journal that I created using a vintage book. Today I have a travel journal that I also created with a vintage book.
I created this book to feature new dies by Tim Holtz for Sizzix. It combines his Idea-olgoy embellishments with several new dies and a new embossing folder.
The base layer of the design is a 4×6 piece of kraft cardstock adhered to the cover of the book. I applied Black Soot Distress ink to the edges of the cardstock. Next, I embossed a piece of red kraft-core cardstock with the new Travel Signs Texture Fade. I sanded the surface of the cardstock after embossing it and applied Black Soot Distress Ink to the edges and onto the surface of some of the raised design areas. I added a metal corner to the top and bottom right corners of the book corner.
I used matte multi medium to decoupage tissue wrap onto a piece of manila cardstock. After the piece was dry, I die cut a postage frame using the new Postage Frame die with the large rectangle insert. After applying Black Soot Distress Ink to the edges, I adhere the frame to the front of the book over the embossed cardstock.
Along the left edge of the book I added half of a picture wheel. I created the picture wheel using the new Picture Wheel die. I die cut two layers from white cardstock. I added pieces of Film Strip Ribbon sandwiched between the two die cut picture wheels. I used the new Torn Notebook On the Edge die to cut the wheel in half, giving it a torn edge look. I used alphabet stamps to add Travel Journal tot he front of the wheel. I used a mini paper clip to the picture wheel to “hold” it in place.
Below the picture wheel I added a mini camera die cut. I die cut two cameras from manila cardstock. I used one for a base. On the other, I cut the different pieces apart with a craft knife. I applied Black Soot Distress Ink with an ink blending tool. I used Brushed Pewter Distress Stain to create metallic pieces. I reassembled and adhered the pieces to the base piece.
I adhered the camera to the front of the book using adhesive foam squares. I tucked assorted gear embellishments and a Compass Coin under the edges of the camera. I added a Pen Nib to the front of the camera.
I added a new Tag Label with a rub-on word next to the camera.
To create the journal in the old book, I used a craft knife to remove the original pages. I added a strip of Sticky Back Canvas to the inside of the book to hide the remnants of the old binding. I added strips of tissue tape next to the Sticky Back Canvas for a fun touch. I added a Ring Binding to the center of the book.
I cut white cardstock pages for the book. To make photo pocket pages, I cut 6×6 page protectors down to fit the book, using a hole punch to add new holes to the page protector.
I love how fun this project turned out! And, it was so easy to create thanks to these fun new dies! I can’t wait to fill it full of memories and photos from my trip to Italy last September.
